Why is education on Youtube so popular?
Children are growing up with technology meaning they are now being more influenced to watch YouTube than TV as Fig 7. shows. Parents are now more likely to use YouTube as a way of educating and amusing their children due to its accessibility especially with the long videos that are produced as (Dredge, 2015b) states from the Little Baby Bum children's channel, “If you’ve got one video that’s 50 or 60 minutes long, you can just press play and leave your child to watch it while you get something done,” and also states before the channel started, "I looked at TV channels like CBeebies and the good quality there, then looked at YouTube, and I thought ‘these don’t really tally’" meaning animations are now looking similar to TV programs, giving more of a reason to choose YouTube over TV. With the new YouTube Kids app in Fig 7. it means children's videos are given more promotion.
The Indian channel, CVS 3D Rhymes videos that created the most popular animations from my research are so popular because education is very important in India and has resulted in a new channel called EduIndia (Mukherjee, 2014), meaning India feels YouTube is an important medium for learning. However these videos are heavily disliked because the content is different to what other countries are used to and are unappealing.
This shows popular videos are not always liked by everyone on YouTube, so popularity doesn't always equal success.
