Ideas, Character Development and Storyboard
Comedy, animals, gaming and education videos appear to be the most popular. However the educational videos have received a bad rating so wouldn't want to risk getting bad feedback. This left with me with mixing the themes of animals and video games so I could reach a bigger audience. (Tom Ska, 2014) stated that, "videos should be relatable," so it should be about pets so their behaviour would be relatable. I decided to go against the common cartoon style and go with a hand drawn look like Simon's Cat and follow the idea of no dialogue so it can be understood worldwide. Lastly my questionnaires show that nearly everyone prefers to watch a short video under 4 minutes, so can't create a complex story.
My research tells that YouTube is designed for frequent uploads and if I make more videos the higher chance my videos will get suggested to viewers so decided to make a series.
I decided to base my idea on dogs because there's already a cat character for YouTube. As a dog owner I feel like my dog acts quite humanly and from this I came up with a series about dogs taking part in human situations. I decided I should just have one character, which I chose to be Max the Dog. Max is the number one name for a dog in 2015, (Rover blog, 2015) and I chose a labrador because it's the most popular breed in 2015 (Entirelypets.com, 2015), meaning there's a high change of liking it.
From this I created different looks and facial expressions and picked the best one. I added in human features like shoes and a hat to go with the story of him wanting to be like a human. Then to add the video game theme in, I decided to make the video about what would happen if Max played popular video games.
